Who we are
We value the complex, contentious and vulnerable position that artists occupy within our world.
Those working in experimental, body-based enquiries, and unfamiliar realms of practice, find a home here.
Through our program of residencies, practice exchange, presentation and subsidised rehearsal and development space, we provide a much-needed homebase and context for artists working across expanded experimental dance and embodied live performance practices.
Through our public program, we tailor opportunities for audiences to engage deeply with this work while it is in the process of creation.
Program
Front Studio Residency
Established in 2025, the Front Studio Residency provides independent artists with two months of exclusive access to the Front Studio to undertake embodied research and practice development.
Six residents are selected annually via an Expression of Interest process assessed by Temperance Hall’s Aritstic Subcommittee.
Each Resident Artist receives an artist stipend, and support towards a facilitated public outcome, with professional documentation.
Temperance Hall's Apartment Studio Residency provides opportunities for artists/collaborations to develop and share new artistic work/choreography/research/experiments with local audiences during their stay.

History
Across its 160+ year history, the building has hosted a wide range of social, cultural and community organisations. Since the arrival of Ant Hill Theatre in the 1980s, it has been home to a succession of influential performance organisations, including Phillip Adams BalletLab from 2017–2023, which cultivated a radical, queer and experimental performance culture and a deeply connected community of artists.
Today, Temperance Hall continues this lineage through an artist-led model supporting independent artists and providing a place for research, development, exchange and the creation of ambitious new work.
